Nov11 Moonrise Kingdom Birthday Party 2014
Any Wes Anderson fans out there? ME! ME! ME! I just saw the title of this submission and I pretty much accepted it in my heart before I even saw the photos. Here are some lovely details for you:
“The party took place at the lovely Catalina Verdugo Adobe Park in Glendale, CA. It was the perfect woodsy location. We encouraged guests to dress up and my mother-in-law even sewed a Suzy Bishop dress based on a vintage pattern. And, I crocheted Wini’s saddle shoes from a pattern I bought from Etsy seller Amanda Moutos Designs.
All the picnic tables were decorated with maps of the Island of Penzance (The fictional island in the movie) along with binoculars, compasses, camping lanterns, boy scout badges, arrows, flowers from the movie and polaroids of my daughter.
The dessert table was adorned with a flannel, camping gear and people could make their own s’mores. The smash cake featured the raccoon badge worn by the khaki scouts in the movie. Boxed Hearts even made a little paper totem pole decoration to add to the atmosphere.
I commissioned an artist, Gabriel Gate, to make a watercolor drawing to welcome the guests as they arrived. Alongside the drawing we had library books and also an iPad to play the movie. To also welcome guests, Boxed Heart Design created a Camp Wini sign made of sticks.
For activities, we had a scavenger hunt. I had Boxed Heart make the scavenger hunt list look like Suzy Bishop’s stationary. We also had a craft where the kids could make their own pine cone birds using paint, glitter, google eyes and feathers. The activities table itself was even adorned with mine and my sister’s old uniform’s from our Girl Scout days!
One of the most fun aspects was the photo booth. Boxed Hearts created a backdrop to like the tent used in the movie and the props included vintage yellow luggage, toy, record player, coonskin cap, glasses, binoculars, bow and arrow, bugle, flannel sheets and library books. Everyone gave their best Wes Anderson poses.”
